Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.

Police state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.

Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials say initial examinations show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.

Local authorities announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the residents for tips.

A senior official commented the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
